How does it work?

A solution of 5-ALA (Aminolevulonic Acid*) is applied to the damaged skin. The treated skin is then exposed to a specific light source sensitising damaged tissue, aiding the body to destroy unhealthy tissue, and assisting in the formation of fresh healthy new skin.

What does the treatment involve?

Dead skin cells are removed with Microdermabrasion (device to remove dead skin cells) and skin is then wiped with acetone or alcohol wipes.

The 5-ALA is applied for 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on your skin type. A light source is used to apply light energy to the treated areas. The light causes the skin to become photo-sensitized. You may feel a little discomfort as the reaction of the light with 5-ALA magnifies the effect of the light on your skin and this reaction helps destroy bad or unhealthy skin.

After the treatment

You may feel as if you have been sunburned — this varies greatly from person to person. You may remain red for several days, and see some peeling and flaky skin. You must wear sunscreen and stay out of the sun for 24-48 hours after the treatment.

*5-ALA is a natural occurring photosensitising compound.
